It is quite normal now to keep your (maiden) surname after you’ve got married. You could even add it to your new Husband’s or Wife’s and go double barrelled. Have you thought about changing your name after your Wedding?
Today I want to talk to you about your options and also, I am giving you a checklist of who needs to know about changing your name after your Wedding.
Firstly, what are your options?
KEEP YOUR MAIDEN NAME, BUT CHANGE FROM MISS TO MRS
You won’t need to change your Passport (or any other documents that don’t display your title) nor do you need a deed poll.
TAKE YOUR PARTNERS NAME
A nice and simple way of changing your name after your Wedding, provided both your Surnames (pre-marriage) are show on your marriage certificate
TAKE YOUR PARTNERS NAME BUT CONTINUE WITH YOUR MAIDEN NAME FOR PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES
Just let your employer know if you change your bank details for your wages.
TAKE YOUR PARTNERS SURNAME, BUT USE YOUR MAIDEN NAME AS A MIDDLE NAME
You would need to make this change via Deed Poll, but it’s a nice way to keep links to your family name
DOUBLE-BARRELL YOUR MAIDEN NAME WITH YOUR SURNAME
Because your two surnames are shown on your marriage certificate, a deed poll isn’t required.
FORM A COMPLETELY NEW SURNAME FROM YOU AND YOUR PARTNERS SURNAMES
This is a new thing but is becoming popular as it symbolises a start of your new life together. You would need to get this done by deed poll.
An example of this would be my name Howard (My maiden name) ad Smallman (My Husband’s name) We could have our surname as Howman.
